| On Other Eastern Orthodox Jurisdictions |
The United American Orthodox Catholic Church (UAO) stands united in faith with other Orthodox Catholic churches, both ancient and modern, being rooted in historic Eastern Orthodox Christian Tradition, which is the consensus of the collective witness of the Faithful across time, space, and culture. We affirm the fullness of Apostolic teaching as demonstrated in the Holy Scriptures, the Nicene Creed, the Seven Ecumenical Councils, and the Patristic tradition.
We observe with great sadness the morass of troubles in which American Orthodoxy finds itself, wherein politics often take precedence over the mission of the Church, which is to make disciples of all peoples. Far loftier were the goals of the Russian Orthodox Church when it established its mission on the North American continent from the late 18th century and provided for an autonomous, independent, American Orthodox Catholic Church by the early 20th century. We hope and pray that the ethnic, subordinative, and sectarian jurisdictionalism currently occupying American Orthodoxy will be resolved sooner rather than later. We are confident that, eventually, by the mercy of God, it will be made right.
Until such time, we have cast aside that which entangles and would hinder us from fulfilling the Church’s mission. To this end, the UAO exists to meet the needs of Orthodox Christians not already being provided for adequately elsewhere. We assume the commission once solemnly undertaken by our predecessors, that of “the full responsibility and duty of caring and providing for American Orthodoxy in the special sense of Orthodox Catholic people born in America and primarily of whatever nationality or linguistic character or derivation not satisfactorily provided with proper canonical Orthodox Catholic care..., or who may wish to attach themselves by the properly and legally provided means to an autonomous, independent, American Orthodox Catholic Church.”
